Political Science is a career meant for young people who want to contribute to and consolidate a better reality. We are looking for students who are interested in society, are committed, have an open, creative, and critical mind, aspire to fully develop their professional career, and want to support an inclusive community.

 

Students in the Political Science course describe themselves as humanists, intelligent, pragmatic, creative, perceptive, and committed. They are interested in issues such as social peace, poverty, justice, gender, economic growth, distribution of power, security, political transparency, among others.

Graduate profile

Modern society, and the modern job market, requires the development of an ample variety of quantitative, qualitative, and normative abilities. Our graduates acquire rigorous and innovative tools for critical analysis, research, writing, programming, and statistical methodology, among others.

 

Our subjects are taught with a normative and ethical foundation. Our graduates can then apply their knowledge in the public, private, and social sectors.

1. The Study Plan

The study plan is designed to give students the tools needed to analyze political and social phenomena, and to generate strategic recommendations that solve social problems. The plan has a multidisciplinary vision that includes philosophy, statistics, history, economics, computer science, game theory, and comparative methods. It guarantees a complete and integral education.

2. Joint majors and the Double Degree

There is an opportunity for students to study two bachelors at the same time and obtain two degrees from ITAM while only studying for a few extra semesters. There is also an opportunity, for specific programs, to do the bachelors and a master’s degree abroad in only four years.

3. The classmates

ITAM's Political Science students consist of diverse origins and upbringings, united by their desire to make society a better place. The diversity of our student body is one of our strengths, creating interesting dialogues and discussions that enrich learning, and our social and political vision.

4. The professors

The professors have doctorates from the best universities in the world, and most of them are a part of Mexico's System of Nacional Researchers (SNI). They are continuously expanding their knowledge through research and cooperation with international organizations and institutions. The students can add their efforts to these research projects, cooperating with professors.

5. Work opportunities and graduate networking

Our students are scouted by private companies, social organizations, and the public sector at federal, state, and municipal levels thanks to their capacity for analysis, and their dedication. Approximately 50% of our graduates work outside the public sector. Our ex-students are a strong source of advice and employment.

Our graduates are in positions where they have the ability to make decisions that affect people´s lives. What unites all of us in the Department of Political Science is the belief that we can create a better, more inclusive, and just society.

7. The Department's events and activities

The department is consistently offering top-rate academic activities with local and foreign researchers, organizing research seminars, conferences, book presentations, workshops, debates, and assemblies.

8. ITAM's teams and clubs

ITAM has a varied student life that consists of a variety of clubs, such as musical clubs, art clubs, debate, literature, robotics, community activities, sexual diversity, dance, online gaming, in-person gaming, and many more. It also has many sporting clubs such as basketball, football, rugby, and other physical activities.

9. Participation in academic publications

ITAM gives the opportunity to develop one's creativity and freedom of expression through its newspaper, El Supuesto. There is also the Gaceta de Ciencia Política, an academic publication for Political Science research that is managed by Political Science students. Many students at ITAM have also been co-authors of articles and book chapters of professors' published works.

10. Postgraduate study

Around 50% of our graduate ex-students go on to postgraduate study. Our ex-students are accepted at the world's best universities, including Harvard, Yale, CalTec, Sydney University, Oxford, LSE, and Essex, among many others.

What is a political scientist?

A person who graduates from Political Science is a political scientist. They study society's political, social, and economic phenomena to understand their causes, and provide solutions that will improve social and individual welfare. They do this by applying evidence-based methods, so that good intentions translate into good results.

What does a political scientist study?

At ITAM, we understand that the world is changing rapidly. That is why we offer the academic training, and updated and modern tools, that you need to understand and analyze political and socioeconomic circumstances, and to be competitive in the national and international job markets.

At ITAM, we prepare you so that you can perform successfully as a critical analyst of political events. You will be able to examine issues and make decisions using the methods that are appropriate for the question. This can be done in the public sector, the private sector, or the social sector.

As a student in the Bachelor of Political Science, you will learn about the following areas of study and will be able to delve into the area that most interests you via the subjects in the study plan, and during the final process of obtaining your degree:

  • Electoral systems and political parties.
  • Public opinion

  • Political history and philosophy
  • Quantitative research methods (statistics, mathematics, and programming) for political analysis 

Some of the research questions you will study in depth by using scientific methods are, among others:

  • Where do we register higher levels of social welfare: in authoritarian regimes or in democratic regimes? 
  • Why are there civil wars and revolutions? 
  • What caused lack of trust in political institutions? What implications does that bring?
  • Why do citizens vote? Is it possible to influence a voter's decision?
  • Why do some candidates admit electoral defeats while others don't? How does the result of an election affect vote buying?
  • How can we improve worker´s lives? 
  • Why do some representatives get reelected while others don't? Is reelection beneficial for societies?

Where does a political scientist work?

The skills students learn at ITAM's Bachelor of Political Science let our graduates be highly competitive in working and academic sectors. Within the following months of finishing their study plans, a 100% of our students manage to find post-graduation employment.

The graduates of Political Science at ITAM work:

  • In the public sector, in executive, legislative, and judicial powers. They design, apply, and evaluate policies, collaborate in the development and execution of laws, and contribute to the administration of justice. Our graduates work as government officials at all levels: federal, state, and municipal.
  • In public, non-governmental organizations like the National Electoral Institute (INE), the Mexican Institute of Social Security (IMSS), the Federal Institute for Access to Public Information and Data Protection (INAI), and the Bank of Mexico.
  • In international organizations like the Inter-American Development Bank, the World Bank, and the United Nations. 
  • • In private global enterprises, where they analyze risks and opportunities and design strategies, such as AT&T, Barleys, and Uber. 
  • As public representatives, such as senators, delegates, governors, and municipal presidents.
  • In consultancy firms specializing in strategy, political communication, and data analysis. 
  • In societal organizations that focus on civil issues, from women's rights to the environment.
  • In management positions for political parties and electoral campaigns. 
  • In lobbying offices that defend the interests of private initiatives to public legislators.
  • In public opinion companies where they measure public opinion and electoral behavior.  
  • As journalists for published newspapers and electronic media, both national and international. 
  • As academics in Mexican universities and universities abroad.

Becas y ayuda financiera

El ITAM cuenta con una de las estrategias de ayuda financiera más generosas de México. Alrededor de uno de cada tres de nuestros alumnos cuenta con ayuda financiera. 

Las becas y préstamos reembolsables otorgados por el ITAM cubren del 10% al 90% de la colegiatura de Licenciatura. 

Disponer ayuda financiera no obliga a los estudiantes a trabajar para la institución o realizar algún tipo de trabajo social. El ITAM busca que los alumnos se concentren en sus estudios profesionales y que disfruten al máximo de la experiencia universitaria.

 

Academic Exchange

The Department of Political Science is highly interested in allowing its students to study a semester abroad in one of the more than 130 universities with which ITAM has an agreement that permits student mobility. When you go to one of these universities, you pay your usual student fees to ITAM (scholarships and loan still apply) and you only cover your day-to-day costs for living abroad.

Some of the preferred destinations for students in Political Science are: Paris, Tokyo, Seoul, Barcelona, Cologne, Budapest, Mannheim (Germany), and Otago (New Zealand), among others.

Summer Programs

Si no quieres permanecer todo un semestre en el extranjero, puedes tomar cursos de entre 3-4 semanas en universidades de clase mundial alrededor del planeta. Este programa es muy flexible y te permite vivir en el extranjero durante el verano y adelantar tu plan de estudios.
